Jonathan Payn & Innes Oliver

A day in the life of a dancer - from class to performance

Saturday 7 May at 11am (doors open 10:30)

This new event brings together one of the country’s best known, most experienced ballet dancers with a young ballerina on the threshold of an equally glittering future. Together they will explain the demands and intricacies of classical ballet through a masterclass, interspersed with anecdotes and personal reflections.

Jonathan will then coach Innes in excerpts from Birmingham Royal Ballet’s repertoire, and illuminate the world of ballet ‘behind the curtain’ before she performs.

Jonathan joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1993, rising to First Soloist in 2006 and in January 2022 was made Principal Character Artist and Assistant Répétiteur. He plays a wide variety of character roles including Drosselmeyer (The Nutcracker) Von Rothbart (Swan Lake) and Elgar (Enigma Variations).

Innes has been dancing since the age of three, and has been an associate student of the Royal Ballet School and Elmhurst Ballet School. She has performed with the National Youth Ballet for four seasons, including principal roles in the junior company and gala performances at Sadlers Wells. Innes lives in Wedmore and is currently studying ballet full time at Moorland Ballet Academy.  Innes is a Wedmore Arts Festival protegee.
